Know the Code is a monthly series highlighting different sections of the County of San Diego Code of Ethics. The mission of the Office of Ethics and Compliance (OEC) is to assist in fulfilling the County’s commitment to the highest standards of ethics and compliance. This month, in recognition of Cyber Security Awareness Month, we are highlighting the Code of Ethics requirements regarding protecting confidential information and some of the tools that are provided by the County to help educate staff and keep County data secure.

TechBlog – What is it, and is it for someone like you?

The County of San Diego strives to provide you with all the resources you need to be successful in your role serving our residents. 

Since handling County data is a component of all our roles, we want to ensure you have the knowledge and awareness necessary to successfully protect the data entrusted to us.  

In addition to policies on InSite, security awareness training modules in the Learning Management System, communications like OEC’s Know the Code microlearning “What is Personally Identifiable Information,” the County Technology Office highlights information security in their TechBlog.

Although it may sound like it, TechBlog is not just for techies. It is a resource for all County employees to learn about technology initiatives, review tips and tools to safeguard County of San Diego data and network infrastructure, learn about communication and training opportunities, and provide input and feedback.

  • Stories in the TechBlog highlight the different ways you can protect your data and the County’s data and some of the common vulnerabilities for both.

  • Monthly security awareness newsletters provide topics that are timely and of interest.

  • Users may also submit department implemented new or emerging technologies to showcase on the TechBlog. The ideas should already be implemented or in production status.

Celebrating Our County Pharmacy Team

The Board of Supervisors recognized the County’s pharmacy workers with a proclamation at Tuesday’s board meeting. The proclamation coincided with National Pharmacy Week, an annual celebration that acknowledges the invaluable contributions pharmacists and pharmacy technicians make to patient care in hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, and other health care settings.

As many other County divisions, the County’s pharmacy department stepped up its efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, working extended hours to ensure medications and COVID-19 vaccines are available to patients seven days a week. 

The County is grateful for its hardworking pharmacy team this week and every week!

Paint Night to honor Dia de los Muertos

Please join us for Paint Night to honor Dia de los Muertos, a cultural celebration of family, friends and love ones who have passed. Local artist Maira Meza will lead us in painting a traditional Dia de Los Muertos image.

The paint night event is a fundraiser for our scholarship program. Everyone is welcomed. Seats are limited. Please RSVP by emailing sdcla@sdcounty.ca.gov. We will send you info to make your ticket purchase. Each ticket is $35. Each guest will receive painting supplies, an art easel, painting instruction from our master artist and appetizers.

Our event will be held in the patio area of Cafeina Café located in City Heights. Coffee and non-caffeinated drinks will be available for purchase. Parking is limited to street parking. We highly encourage car pooling when available.

We look forward to seeing you at our fundraiser Paint Night Dia de los Muertos on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 530pm @ Cafeina Café (4011 46th St. San Diego CA, 92105).

Hey! “Donut” miss this sweet occasion! County Employees’ Charitable Organization is hosting a doughnut fundraiser, so you can get delicious doughnuts and help people in your community. Buy a dozen or two Krispy Kremes to support CECO and all proceeds will go back out to the community in the form of grants to local nonprofits or to support the Employee Crisis Fund.

Focused on Disability Employment Triumphs

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This month we focus on disability employment triumphs, as well as note there are learning opportunities.

The DiverseAbility Employee Resource Group in collaboration with other ERGs and County departments will be engaging in activities to help educate ourselves and others on disability employment issues and demonstrate its commitment to an inclusive work culture. These efforts include lunch and learns, participation in Jobtoberfest and a book club discussion. Stay tuned for upcoming dates.

This year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month’stheme is “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion.” It reflects how important it is for people with disabilities to have full access to employment and community involvement during the national recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. From the U.S. Department of Labor:

The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945 when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

“Our national recovery from the pandemic cannot be completed without the inclusion of all Americans, in particular people with disabilities,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. “Their contributions have historically been vital to our nation’s success and are more important today than ever. We must build an economy that fully includes the talent and drive of those with disabilities.”

Employers and employees in all industries can learn more about how to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month and ways they can promote its messages — during October and throughout the year — by visiting dol.gov/NDEAM.
