Check Your Mood Is Going Virtual

CheckYourMood_1500px.jpg

Check Your Mood 2020 is going virtual on Oct. 8 in conjunction with National Depression Screening Day.

The purpose of this annual event is to engage and encourage San Diegans to monitor and assess their emotional well-being. Getting screened for depression is an important part of healthcare checkups, much like getting your blood pressure checked or being screened for heart disease or diabetes.

This is especially true this year given the added stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With additional concerns about the economic impact of the pandemic, many may feel overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, or worry.

Virtually join other community members across San Diego county to get free mental health resources, take the online Check Your Mood self- assessment and participate in the social media campaign to raise awareness about mental health. Use #StigmaFreeSD in your posts.

Good mental health starts with you.

In addition to the week of virtual screenings at Check Your Mood online, the County’s Access and Crisis Line 888-724-7240 continues to be available seven days a week, 24 hours a day in multiple languages and can provide information to access services.

The County of San Diego’s Employee Assistance Program also offers 24/7 assistance if you or someone in your household needs to talk about depression. You can call EAP at 888-777-6665.

Rise by Lifting Others with CECO

CECO Logo.png

As a region we want to cultivate opportunities for all people and communities to grow, connect and enjoy the highest quality of life. That is why the San Diego County Employees’ Charitable Organization (CECO) is focusing its 2020 Fall Campaign around the vision of "we rise by lifting others!"

The annual drive will focus on two important missions this year: sharing a grant opportunity with organizations in your community, and engaging more employees to sign up for bi-weekly payroll contributions and support fundraising efforts that will ultimately allow CECO to grant more money to more nonprofits.

Sharing the Application

If you know of a local nonprofit organization that could benefit from a grant allocation to improve services that address the diverse needs of our San Diego region, let them know about CECO. And let them know that CECO is now accepting grant applications for 2021.

These grants, which vary from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars, support vulnerable populations such as seniors, people experiencing homelessness, at-risk youth and people with disabilities.

Local nonprofits can download, fill out and submit applications until Nov. 2.

To help nonprofits with the process, CECO is hosting a free virtual "Grants 101 Workshop" for community members to learn the basics of applying for a grant. The workshop will be held Thursday, Oct. 8 from noon to 1:30 p.m. RSVP online.

Sharing Your Generosity

CECO is funded entirely by donations from County employees like you. CECO has distributed more than $6.9 million throughout the San Diego region to local non-profit organizations and employees in crisis since its founding in 1956.

If you are not a bi-weekly contributor, consider becoming one. You can give as little as $2 per pay period. A little can go a long way for local nonprofits.

See CECO pledge instructions or reach out to your CECO Department Representative or sdceco@sdcounty.ca.gov for any questions.

Take the Trivia Challenge for Filipino American History Month

shutterstock_1824398462.jpg

Test your knowledge during Filipino American History Month (FAHM). Our County of San Diego Filipino-American Employee Association (CSDFEA) has put together a trivia challenge for employees.

One randomly selected challenger will get to choose a local nonprofit to receive $50 from CSDFEA. Everyone who completes all of the trivia questions (regardless of score) will be entered. The randomly selected participant will be announced Nov. 2.

FAHM is celebrated during the month of October to commemorate the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on Oct. 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore and landed at what is now Morro Bay. With over 4 million Filipinos in the U.S. today, FAHM brings awareness of the significant role that Filipinos have played in American history.

CSDFEA is celebrating all month long with several virtual events and activities. Stay tuned to InSite for information.

COVID-19 Update for Oct. 2

Message from Helen Robbins-Meyer, Chief Administrative Officer

I was already planning to update you today about the status of County operations amid the pandemic – and then came news that President Trump and the First Lady have tested positive for the new coronavirus. We hope they, and the staff member also testing positive, will get through the infection without any ill effects.

It is a sobering reminder that the virus is still out there, still spreading, and everyone is susceptible.

Hitting the quarterly milestone of October puts us at just over half a year since our stay-at-home orders went into place, radically changing how we live and how all of us at the County work.

My “update” in this case is to let you know our current mode of operations will remain largely in place for now. With a few exceptions, we’re just not in a position yet to start looking at bringing employees to offices and opening doors to the public.

Besides making sure overall metrics for the region stay in the right direction, a couple things we want to see: the reopening of schools, from kindergartens to colleges, get safely underway. And how this flu season shapes up. The one-two of COVID-19 and the flu has public health professionals concerned, so we want to see how that unfolds. I’ll remind you we’re in the middle of providing free flu shots to employees, and I’m really hoping to see 100% of our workforce vaccinated. Here are details and the schedule.

We’re able to continue operating this way because we’ve made it work for our residents. You’ve made it work. The Teams meetings, conference calls, virtual this, that and the other thing. With all the challenges, you’ve still been able to deliver the exceptional service our customers deserve. If we can keep that up while avoiding the interactions that raise the risk of spreading the virus, we need to stick with it.

I can’t say enough how much I appreciate your service – always, but especially under these circumstances. Please continue to support each other as we all work toward achieving the public good.

Get A Flu Vaccination for Your Shot to Win

Not only can the flu shot help protect you from influenza, but you could win a sweet prize.

Here’s how: get your flu shot, snap a selfie to appear on InSite and submit your photo to communications@sdcounty.ca.gov. Five random entries will be selected to win a farm box filled with fruits and veggies from Daily Harvest Express. Winners will be announced on Oct. 26.

Flu season is here. Influenza is highly contagious and can spread quickly in our community.  The flu shot is the most important step in protecting against the flu.

“Make sure you are doing everything you can to protect yourself, your family, and those around you by getting a flu shot,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.

Help fight the flu. Get your flu shot at no cost! See the schedule.

Turn Your Exercise into Donated Meals

feed-2.png

Live Well San Diego has partnered with an app called Vizer that allows you to turn your exercise time into donated meals to the San Diego Food Bank.

Sign up for the free app, sync your Fitbit, Apple Watch or smartphone to track your steps or exercise minutes, and then get moving! When you reach 30 minutes or 10,000 steps, a sponsor will donate a meal on your behalf to the San Diego Food Bank.

This month is Hunger Action Month and our goal is to get 25,000 meals donated for students with the campaign Steps for Students.
